Research Assistant in Artificial Intelligence for Power Electronics Design

Aalborg Universitet

Fra Varbi

At AAU Energy, a fixed-term position as Research Assistant in Artificial Intelligence for Power Electronics Design, is open for appointment from January 1, 2027, or soon hereafter. The duration of the position is 2 years.

Your work tasks
Your work will include developing, training and evaluating machine-learning models based on circuit data, board geometries, simulation results and design images. You will develop surrogate models that approximate thermal and electromagnetic solvers, enabling faster evaluation of design alternatives. The position may also involve computer vision for recognizing circuit structures, component placements and printed circuit board geometries from photographs or other images. In addition, you will investigate graph-based methods for representing circuit relationships, evaluating design rules and generating or testing hypotheses for circuit designs. You will contribute to the development and verification of agentic workflows, where artificial intelligence systems combine models, tools and design rules to reason through and support electronics design tasks. You will prepare datasets, document computational workflows, validate model performance and share results with colleagues working in artificial intelligence, power electronics, semiconductors and software development.

The position is offered within the research field of Artificial Intelligence for Power Electronics Design and contributes to AAU Energy’s focus areas of Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence, and Energy Efficiency in Components and Systems. The Research Assistant will be affiliated with the Section of Power Electronics System Integration and Materials.

Your competencies
You have a relevant master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, artificial intelligence or a related field, and you are interested in working at the intersection of machine learning and power electronics design. You have a solid foundation in applied machine learning. Familiarity with electronic systems, including printed circuit boards, circuit topologies, components and the physical principles that influence electrical, thermal and electromagnetic performance, will help you engage with the engineering context of the role.

You have practical experience developing, training and evaluating machine-learning models, and you can translate complex engineering challenges into data-driven methods suited to a research environment. You are comfortable working with structured and unstructured engineering data, including circuit representations, board geometries, simulation data and images. Experience with computer vision, graph-based machine learning or graph neural networks will support your work with methods that interpret circuit layouts and geometries, reason about relationships between components, and generate or assess design hypotheses.

You are interested in developing surrogate models that approximate thermal and electromagnetic simulation tools while maintaining sufficient accuracy for use in electronics-design workflows. You work systematically with model validation, data quality and reproducible experiments, and you understand that artificial intelligence methods for engineering need to be technically robust as well as useful to domain specialists.

You communicate clearly in English, both in writing and dialogue, and you work well in a multidisciplinary environment where colleagues with expertise in artificial intelligence, power electronics and software development collaborate closely. You take responsibility for your tasks, ask constructive questions when assumptions need clarification, and contribute with curiosity and sound technical judgement to the development of new methods for intelligent electronic-system design.

Who we are
AAU Energy is a research department at Aalborg University dedicated to the development of clean and sustainable energy systems. Our activities cover electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technologies, and we work closely with industrial partners and other academic environments to address real-world energy challenges.

The department is located in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, and this position is based at the Aalborg campus. AAU Energy employs around 250 staff members at different career stages and from a broad range of national backgrounds. This creates an international and interdisciplinary research environment with many opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. English is widely used as the working language in research and teaching, which makes it straightforward for international colleagues to integrate.

We offer access to advanced laboratory and workshop facilities and an environment where you can develop your academic profile through research, teaching and collaboration with both Danish and international external partners. As a workplace we value a collegial and inclusive culture with room for professional discussion, initiative and mutual support in everyday work.

New colleagues, whether they come from elsewhere in Denmark or from abroad, can draw on the university’s support services related to relocation, housing and practical matters. Aalborg University offers general onboarding support to all new employees, as well as dedicated support for international staff through its International Staff Unit (ISU). You can read more about relocation support and services here: https://www.en.hr.aau.dk/relocation-support

Aalborg University also offers Danish language courses to support international employees in settling into both the workplace and Danish society. International employees typically can attend Danish language courses during their first years in Denmark (depending on individual eligibility and national schemes).
