At Johnson Controls, we're accelerating the transition towards more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating and cooling solutions. To support this journey, we are looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Specialist who thrives at the intersection of laboratory testing, technical leadership, and continuous improvement.
In this role, you will become a key technical expert within our laboratory organization, driving advanced testing and validation activities for industrial chillers, heat pumps, and refrigeration systems. You will contribute directly to the development of future technologies while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.
What you will do
As our new Senior Engineering Specialist, you will take a leading role in planning, executing, and developing laboratory testing activities. Working closely with R&D, Product Engineering, and external stakeholders, you will:
- Lead performance, reliability, durability, and functional testing of industrial chillers and heat pumps.
- Support prototype development, product validation, certification, and technology verification activities.
- Conduct testing involving natural refrigerants, including Ammonia (R717), Butane (R600), and other A3 refrigerants.
- Drive the development and continuous improvement of laboratory capabilities, measurement systems, and test methodologies.
- Specify, implement, and commission new instrumentation and data acquisition solutions.
- Act as a technical mentor for laboratory engineers, technicians, and operators.
- Support customer witness testing and strategic product development projects.
- Promote and drive LEAN principles and continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory.
- Take ownership of laboratory safety processes and contribute to a strong safety culture.
- Perform risk assessments related to refrigeration systems, pressure equipment, electrical systems, and refrigerant technologies.
- Ensure compliance with internal standards and relevant regulatory requirements.
What we are looking for
You bring a strong technical foundation combined with extensive hands-on laboratory experience and a passion for developing both people and technology.
You likely hold a degree within Mechanical Engineering, Refrigeration Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a similar technical discipline and have several years of experience working with HVAC&R testing, laboratory engineering, or related development activities.
Furthermore, we imagine that you have:
- Solid experience with chillers, heat pumps, refrigeration systems, compressors, and control systems.
- Strong knowledge of thermodynamics and refrigeration cycles.
- Experience working with natural refrigerants, including ammonia and A3 refrigerants.
- Knowledge of instrumentation, measurement technology, automation, and data acquisition systems.
- A structured and analytical approach to troubleshooting and technical problem solving.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across multiple functions and stakeholders.
It would be an advantage if you have
- Experience with industrial refrigeration systems and high-temperature heat pumps.
- Knowledge of standards and regulations such as EN14511, EN14825, ISO 17025, PED, Machinery Safety, and ATEX.
- Experience leading safety initiatives, audits, or laboratory compliance programs.
- Previous experience mentoring colleagues or acting as a technical lead.
What we offer
At Johnson Controls, you will join a highly skilled international engineering environment where innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning are part of everyday life.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Influence the development of future sustainable HVAC and heat pump solutions.
- Work with advanced laboratory facilities and cutting-edge technologies.
- Collaborate with talented colleagues across engineering, R&D, and product management.
- Develop your technical expertise while taking on significant ownership and responsibility.
- Be part of a company committed to innovation, sustainability, and professional growth.
